Wheldon won the entire IndyCar series championship when he was named the winner of the 2005 Indianapolis 500. He also won Indianapolis 500 in May of this year. This time, it was announced that any non-regular IndyCar drivers who won the race could be offered a $5million bonus. Mr Wheldon was in line for this bonanza, pushing him to drive faster than normal.

The 33-year-old driver lived in St Petersburg, Florida with his wife Susie, and two sons Sebastian and Oliver. Wheldon is named the first IndyCar driver who died on the track since 2006 when the life of Paul Dana was claimed away at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The accident also made three other drivers injured, including Will Power, the championship contender.
