Increasing air and ocean temperatures, shrinking glaciers, and a widespread melting of snow and ice are obvious evidences of a dramatically changing global climate, which directly affects the future of natural and human systems. It’s time for us to think about effective methods to prevent the serious problem.
The researches done by four different groups including NASA, Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Britain’s Hadley Center and Climatic Research Unit (Univ. of East Anglia) show a warming of the Earth over the past century, with rapid increases over the past few decades.
World Global Temperature Departures Datasets
Global surface temperatures have increased at an average rate of 0.13ºF per decade since 1901. The US has warmed nearly twice as fast as the global average since the 1970s
The years between 1995 and 2006 are listed among the 12 warmest years in the instrumental record of global surface temperature since 1850
In the past 100 years, average Arctic temperatures have raised at almost twice the global average rate
The Arctic Sea ice has shrunk on average 2.7% per decade, with larger decreases in the summer of about 7.4% since 1978
More than 2,000 cubic miles of water in glaciers worldwide have been lost since 1960, leading to observed changes in sea level rise
Seasonally frozen ground has dropped by 7%, up to 15% in the spring, in the Northern Hemisphere since 1900
Sea surface temperatures rose at an average rate of 0.12 degrees per decade from 1901 through 2009
The ocean heat content, which not only determines sea surface temperature but also impacts sea level and currents, has increased considerably since 1955
The sea level rose on average 3mm (0.1 inches) per year between 1993 and 2005, attributing to an increase in melting ice and thermal expansion as the ocean absorbs excess energy
Cyclone intensity with hurricanes, tropical storms, and other intense rotating storm has increased noticeably over the past 20 years
